Problem: Detect and characterize cracks on the far-side of austenitic welds in presence of geometrical reflections
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems
PNNL Solution:
- Use phased array to scan multiple angles on a single line scan to discriminate flaws from geometry
- Overcame conditions that limit other methods: a) Access to both sides may be limited; b) Welds absorb and re-direct acoustic energy; c) Ultrasonic responses from weld root and counter-bore mask flaws
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Ultrasonic inspection, statistics, materials science.
