Assess Ultrasonic Inspection Reliability (247)

Probability of Detection measures graphic

Problem: Develop quantitative estimate of ultrasonic in-service inspection effectiveness for flaw detection

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement and Analysis Method Development

PNNL Solution:

  • Conducted inspection round robin to establish performance baseline
  • Results showed that probability of flaw detection is very dependent on material type and individual inspector
  • Concluded inspector proficiency test was best way to improve flaw detection reliability
  • Developed and evaluated inspector exams based on round robin results

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs:Ultrasonic pipe inspection, statistics, Material science.
