Portable Hardness Test System photo

Problem: Need nondestructive means to determine yield strength of in-service gas transmission pipe

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Measurement and Analysis Method Development through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Used statistical analysis to determine relationship between hardness and yield strength
  • Obtained industry test data to develop a database
  • Validated procedure
  • Provided client with simplified sampling tables and written test methodology

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Interdisciplinary team building, metallurgical engineering, mechanical testing and statistical data analysis. Interpreted results for client with simplified statistical tables. Provided client with a written petition to DOT for changes to CFR 192.
