Robotic Crawler with Scanning Bridge Inspection Unit Hanging on Simulated Tank Sidewall

Problem: Need to perform remote, non-destructive inspection of tanks in very hazardous environments.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Circuits and Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Utilize proven ultrasonic NDE inspection technology
  • Integrated robotic crawler to carry the NDE probe into extremely hard to reach areas (e.g., in annular space between walls of double shelled tanks)
  • Successfully use system for routine inspection of underground storage tanks

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: System integration with existing COTS equipment, precision mechanical design and fabrication, Solidworks modeling and simulation, RF shielding, and ultrasonic transducer application.
