In-Situ Monitor for Mixing Effectiveness (225)
Problem: In-situ method needed to monitor the effectiveness of mixing of fluids & particulate laden suspensions
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement and Analysis System Applications
PNNL Solution:
- Demonstrate ultrasonic method to monitor mixing effectiveness (i.e. slurry/mixture concentration changes)
- Developed non-invasive ultrasonic probe suitable for pipe or tank uses
- Rapid data analysis method yields real-time results for process control
- Suitable for use during mixing, settling, processing or transport
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Ultrasonics - sensor configuration, integration; data acquisition - developing the electronics required to automate the sensor; fluid dynamics - model development of ultrasonic signal attenuation versus frequency over range of particle sizes and slurry properties; interrogation of multiphase systems during mixing and transport to evaluate probe performance
