Monitoring Fish Deterrence Near Hazards (359)

Graphic representation of strobe light and sonar deployment

Problem: Determine effectiveness of methods intended to guide endangered, migrating fish around man-made hazards.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Measurement and Analysis Method Development through Measurement and Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Design and deploy sonar transducer arrays and data collection system to monitor fish motion in test areas
  • Monitor strobe light array ability to deter fish from turbine intakes
  • Collect, process and analyze field data to assess hazard mitigation effect
  • Monitor fish behavior and system performance via remote data links
  • Data allowed objective evaluation of method effectiveness on fish behavior

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Acoustic physics; sonar equipment design and deployment; electronics development for probe drivers, signal processing, and balance of system; algorithm development for data integration to track fish and other underwater objects fine scale motion; computer software for system control, test performance, data acquisition and analysis; mechanical design for hardware mounting; field test planning and performance; data analysis and reporting; hydrology and other environmental monitoring.
