Ultrasonic Nondestructive Evaluation (224)

Problem: Leverage knowledge of ultrasonic field interactions with various materials to solve diverse problems.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

Photo representing electromagnetic field interactions with metals with links to related examples Ultrasonic Case Depth Hardness Method (102) Ultrasonic Fingerprints of Materials (103) In-Situ Gas-Solids Flow Measurements (84) Acoustic Evaluation of Liquids in Containers (104) Wood Pulp Characterization During Refining (94) Slurry Particle Size and Concentration Probe (95) In-Line Fluid-Slurry Density Measurement (93)

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs:

Ultrasonic field interactions homogeneous and inhomogeneous materials including metals, liquids, and slurries (single phase, multi-phase, with and without interfaces/flaws, etc.); modeling of field propagation and interactions; ultrasound/acoustic frequency and wavelengths effects; ultrasonic probe design including single element and arrays for source and detector applications; ultrasonic field measurements and instrumentation; data analysis methods; specialized equipment development, application and deployment; laboratory and field measurements. (See specific capabilities for various operating regimes and applications on individual capability/example slides referenced on the figure.)
