Problem: Apply Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Real-Time Ultrasonic Inspection System (55) (RTUIS) to on-line inspection of aircraft components

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed RTUIS system to meet on-line requirements (top photo) (done by Pacific Northwest)
  • Developed computer-controlled robot for rapid inspection of diverse components (bottom photo) (done by Dassault)
  • Installed integrated system; validated on Dassault production line
  • Provided training and documentation
  • Inspection technology won an R&D 100 Award in 1995

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs:

Ultrasonic transducer technology; optical physics; holography phenomena; RF and high voltage electronics design and fabrication; electronic control and signal processing electronics; mechanical system design and fabrication; non-destructive evaluation technology requirements and evaluation; video equipment integration; image analysis software application; computer system development for system control, data acquisition/storage, and data analysis; system documentation and support; client staff training.
