Flaw Detection in Layered Metal Structures (178)

Equipment Lab Testing of Measurement Method on Layered Metal Samples

Problem: Need to detect flaws in metal materials hidden behind other metal sheets (multi-layer components)

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Pulsed electromagnetic (PEM) fields penetrate deeply into metals creating pulsed eddy currents
  • Developed & demonstrated PEM detection of metal flaws indicated by metal conductivity anomalies
  • Superior to conventional eddy current inspection (deeper flaw detection & faster inspection)
  • US patents (5,777,469; 5,986,452; and 6,014,024) have been awarded for these developments

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Flaw detection development based on pulsed electromagnetic interactions (eddy currents) with metals; lab demonstration probe developed; signal processing electronics development; electromechanical test fixture design & fabrication; fabrication of samples with standard flaws for method evaluation; test planning and analysis; reporting of results & test methods.
