Problem: Develop system to monitor the effects of use-loading on structural members and detect failure precursors

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Demonstrated detection of material stress/changes using stress-driven acoustic emission from material
  • Demonstrated use of advanced signal analysis to discriminate material changes from system operating sounds
  • Tested on bridges, aircraft, and piping

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Ultrasonic transducer development; electronic design for signal processing and electronic decision making; integrated electronic system design; laboratory testing to validate signal correlation with physical phenomena; advanced data analysis methods including neural networks; mechanical design for system mounting fixtures and electronics packaging; field installation and testing; analysis of test results; test documentation.
