On-Line Detection of Key Equipment Failure (105)

On-Line Detection of Key Equipment Failure

Problem: Develop a reliable, on-line method to monitor manufacturing equipment for critical component failure

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Determined acoustic signatures that can detect key component failure
  • Designed system using commercial sensors with PNNL electronics, signal analysis, and controls
  • Successfully integrated system into operating industrial production line
  • Transferred technology to commercial source
  • R&D 100 Award winner in 2000
  • FLC Award winner in 2001

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Production plant testing to determine broad spectral acoustic signatures and levels associated with normal operation; testing to determine acoustic signatures associated with equipment failure; analysis of broad spectrum acoustic data to determine spectral signatures that allowed reliable failure detection; transducer selection; electronics design; signature analysis development based on exploitable acoustic signature; prototype equipment development for on-line equipment monitor; mechanical design for instrument housing and plant installation; equipment installation on production line; on-line testing to verify operation with low false alarms and reliable failure detection; technology transfer to selected vendor.
