Problem: Detect and map oil spills and other fluorescent materials in an open environment at night

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Determined fluorescence signatures for oils and other materials
  • Developed multichannel airborne scanner with internal light sourceto excite and detect fluorescence
  • Demonstrated performance using rhodamine dye, controlled oil spills, and real-world oil spills

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Optical design; mechanical design; manufacture of optical components; electronics; photonics; and aerial field surveys.
