Automated Cavitation Characterization (65)

Metal surface image showing cavitation pits

Problem: Effectively measure the size distribution of cavitation-induced pits in superplastic formed metal parts

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Digitized photographic images of polished cross-sectional slices
  • Used mage processing/analysis software to measure pit diameters
  • Developed software to automate the measurement for full image
  • NOTE: Results allowed optimization of the superplastic forming parameters

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Image digitization; image processing and analysis; software development; data analysis and reporting.
