Crack/Flaw Detection in Metal Parts (53)

Crack/Flaw Detection in Metal Parts

Problem: Detect cracks and flaws in brass cartridge cases rapidly enough to support on-line inspection requirements

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Tested eddy current probe design options on a variety of sample flaws
  • Selected differential coil probe and rapid part rotation for inspection
  • Developed probe, signal analysis electronics and mechanical handler
  • Provided proven method to enable design of hardened module
Crack/Flaw Detection in Metal Parts

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Eddy current inspection methods; electromagnetic field interactions with metals and flaws; coil design for flaw detection sensitivity; analog and digital electronics design, fabrication, and testing for signal processing; mechanical equipment design; bench testing of design alternatives; design trade-off analysis; test design, analysis and reporting; system design documentation.
