Problem: Determine viable methods for detecting defective food containers that may represent consumer health risks

PNNL Solution:

  • Identified established and candidate inspection methods suitable for salmon can inspection
  • Determined common can flaws
  • Performed lab evaluation of candidate methods for flaw detection
  • Identified most promising methods for key container flaws

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Problem clarification/definition; laboratory test planning, performance, and evaluation; commercial equipment identification and evaluation; evaluation of developmental inspection methods; data evaluation versus operational criteria; development of conceptual design for practical inspection system; reporting of results to review panel and final report; optical imaging and structured light methods for shape characterization and flaw detection; electromagnetic inspection methods; fluorescence properties of materials and measurement methods; x-ray imaging and image analysis; acoustic and ultrasonic interactions and inspection methods.
