Problem: Develop practical, cost-effective system to monitor a radioactive molten glass stream pouring into a steel canister

PNNL Solution:

  • Demonstrated that video camera with optical filters can provide required pour stream monitoring
  • Developed optical periscope to effectively monitor fill process from outside radiation zone
  • Designed & deployed integrated system in waste glassification plant

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Spectral analysis of video camera sensitivity and optical emittance properties of hot materials; optical filter selection for optimized sensitivity for monitoring glass pour; optical system design; video instrumentation; opto-mechanical engineering; mechanical engineering.
