Real-Time Monitor for Glass Pour Level (71)
Problem: Develop cost-effective system to monitor the level of glass poured into steel canister for radioactive waste storage
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems
PNNL Solution:
- Demonstrated feasibility and validated precision in using an IR camera to monitor fill level
- Designed a housing to shield the camera from nuclear radiation
- Investigated glass pour stream characteristics inside the canister using a filtered video camera
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Infrared (IR) thermography; image processing and analysis; optical engineering; mechanical engineering; radiation sensitivity analysis.
