Real-time Monitor for Glass Pour Level

Problem: Develop cost-effective system to monitor the level of glass poured into steel canister for radioactive waste storage

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Demonstrated feasibility and validated precision in using an IR camera to monitor fill level
  • Designed a housing to shield the camera from nuclear radiation
  • Investigated glass pour stream characteristics inside the canister using a filtered video camera

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Infrared (IR) thermography; image processing and analysis; optical engineering; mechanical engineering; radiation sensitivity analysis.
