Flaw Detection in Magnetic Materials (106)

MFL Image

Problem: Develop non-destructive method to detect corrosion metal loss and flaws in ferrous/magnetic metal components

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Because eddy current methods are limited due to magnetic interactions, developed Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) method to image defects
  • Showed MFL can inspect inside surface from opposite surface
  • Successfully demonstrated inspection of waste storage drums

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Sensor development based on Hall effect sensors; signal processing electronics development; image acquisition and analysis; electromechanical test fixture design and fabrication; ultrasonic NDE tests for data validation; surface profilometry; test planning and analysis; reporting of results and test methods.
