Imaging Through Atmospheric Mist (111)

Problem: Determine useful "optical" wavelength (UV-VIS-IR) for imaging through an atmosphere containing heavy mist

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

Imaging Through Atmospheric Mist

PNNL Solution:

  • Assembled chamber with controlled fog/rain (drop size, density, composition)
  • Assembled imaging/test equipment
  • Viewed target through fog chamber using alternative imaging sensors
  • Determined best imaging mode and band for various fog/rain conditions
  • Formally reported test results

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Sensor technology in the visible, near infrared, far infrared, and mm-wave electromagnetic spectra; acoustic sensor technology; video image data acquisition; image processing techniques; system fabrication and assembly; test methodology and data analysis; atmospheric attenuation characteristics.
