Rapid Non-Contact Gauging of Parts (78)

Rapid Non-contact Gauging of Parts

Problem: Provide method for rapid, accurate measurement of multiple dimensions on manufactured brass cartridge cases

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Selected optical edge detection method based on bench-scale tests
  • Designed optics for simultaneous measurement of five dimensions
  • Developed detection and decision electronics to inspect 20 parts/sec
  • Integrated gauging subsystem into overall product inspection system
Rapid Non-contact Gauging of Parts

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Optical system design; coherent fiber-optic bundle fabrication and evaluation; analog and digital electronics design, fabrication, and testing; linear optical diode array technology application; mechanical equipment design; bench testing of design alternatives; design trade-off analysis; test design, analysis, and reporting; system design documentation.
