Optical Detection of Food Can Leakage (89)
Problem: Provide method for automated detection of food can leakage to support food safety quality assurance inspection
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications
PNNL Solution:
- Determined if fluids used routinely for canning salmon produce useful optical fluorescence signatures
- Demonstrated detection of small fluid leaks using fluorescence inspection methods
- Developed conceptual design for practical inspection system
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Literature and industry survey of standard inspection practices; experimental characterization of optical interactions (absorption and fluorescence) with salmon can contents (tissue, oils, etc.); line scan cameras to detect can damage; weight and acoustic can inspection methods; laboratory optical system development to detect can deformations and the presence of contents leakage to can exterior; lab feasibility tests and data analyses; data preparation and presentation.
