Macro Property Measurement
Slurry Particle Size and Concentration Probe (95)
Problem: Develop in situ method to measure particle size and concentration in slurries for process monitoring and control
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Measurement & Analysis Method Development through Integrated Systems
PNNL Solution:
- Established ultrasonic method to determine required slurry properties
- Developed in-line ultrasonic probe
- Used rapid data analysis method to provide real-time results for process control
- Demonstrated technology at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory
- NOTE: This technology is suitable for use during mixing, settling, processing, and transport
Measuring slurry concentration in a tank
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Ultrasonics (sensor configuration, integration); data acquisition (developing the electronics required to automate the sensor); fluid dynamics (model development of ultrasonic signal attenuation versus frequency over range of particle sizes and slurry properties; interrogation of multiphase systems during mixing and transport to evaluate probe performance).
