Acoustic Impact Detection/Triangulation (58)

Acoustic Impact Detection/Triangulation

Problem: Develop reliable method to detect and locate the impact of micro-meteorites on the skin of the space station

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Conducted lab demonstration of acoustic emission detection for small particle impacts on "skin"
  • Demonstrated triangulation analysis method to locate impact
  • Developed analysis software and sensor arrays to provide routine impact detection and location

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Acoustic sensor design; acoustic properties of metals; signal processing; temporal analysis of signals from multiple sensors; data reduction algorithm development; laboratory test planning and performance; test results reporting.
