Fuel Injector Aerosol Characterization (63)

Fuel Injector Aerosol Characterization

Problem: Develop method to measure size distribution of droplets produced by automotive engine fuel injectors

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Used pulsed laser holography to "instantly" record full spray "image"
  • Image spray in test chambers, intake ports, and combustion chamber
  • Developed automated hologram analysis to determine droplet sizes
  • Demonstrated spray imaging and data analysis for commercial fuel injectors

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Optical system design for holographic imaging; spray chamber design with optical access; pulsed laser application; optical system design for hologram interrogation; image processing and analysis; electronics (digital); software for control and data reduction; mechanical component design; system integration.
