In-Situ Gas-Solids Flow Measurements (84)

Velocity Profile

Problem: Reliable techniques needed to measure velocity and particle concentration/distributions in dense loaded gas flows

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis Method Development

PNNL Solution:

  • Angled, ultrasonic time-of-flight data is sensitive to velocity & mixture density
  • A lab test loop was used with controlled flowing gas/solids mixtures (80 micron dia. particles and loadings up to 20 vol%)
  • Data correlation was checked against baseline & optical measurement methods

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: ultrasonic tomography and millimeter wave measurements -(sensor configuration, integration); data acquisition/signal processing (developing the electronics and software to process the signal and automate the sensor) and fluid dynamics (development of experimental flow loop and interpretation of measurements).
