Non-Contact Valve Seat Inspection (110)

Non-contact Valve Seat Inspection Acceptable valve without critical scratches

Problem: Provide non-contact method to detect defects in valve seats that would effect valve performance

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Measurement and Analysis Method Development through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Employed fiber-optic borescope system to inspect interior surface of valve housings for scratch defects
  • Designed illumination system to provide optimal defect detection
  • Used video image enhancement to improve critical scratch detection
  • Successfully demonstrated method
Non-contact Valve Seat Inspection Reject valve with critical scratch defect

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Optical system design; lighting techniques; digital image acquisition equipment; fiber-optic borescope applications; video image processing techniques including evaluation of alternative defect detection algorithms; mechanical design; testing methodology and data analysis; system fabrication and assembly; computer interface design.
