Problem: Detect and track aircraft wing tip vortices that may be dangerous to following aircraft on landing approach

- Used passive microwave radiometer to sense engine emissions rolled up in tip vortex
- Completed proof-of-principle tests
- Conducted initial proof-of-concept tests at Denver International Airport
- Demonstrated detection sensitivity for practical application requirements
- NOTE: This innovation is deployable on ground or aircraft
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Microwave radiometry; instrumentation and data acquisition system deployment; fluid mechanics (modeling and analysis); commercial and research sensor evaluation for application requirements; statistical analysis of data; test planning, execution, and analysis.
