Aircraft Wake Vortex Detection

Problem: Detect and track aircraft wing tip vortices that may be dangerous to following aircraft on landing approach

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Measurement and Analysis Method Development through Measurement and Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Used passive microwave radiometer to sense engine emissions rolled up in tip vortex
  • Completed proof-of-principle tests
  • Conducted initial proof-of-concept tests at Denver International Airport
  • Demonstrated detection sensitivity for practical application requirements
  • NOTE: This innovation is deployable on ground or aircraft
Aircraft Wake Vortex Detection

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Microwave radiometry; instrumentation and data acquisition system deployment; fluid mechanics (modeling and analysis); commercial and research sensor evaluation for application requirements; statistical analysis of data; test planning, execution, and analysis.
