Wood Pulp Characterization During Refining (94)

Wood Pulp Characterization During Refining

Problem: The pulp and paper industry needs on-line, real-time measurement of pulp refining, consistency, and mineral content

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Measurement and Analysis Method Development through Measurement and Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Ultrasonically characterized pulp slurries at various stages of refining
  • Analyzed data against pulp type, processing status, and mineral content
  • Employed multiple sensing techniques to provide broader capability
  • NOTE: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is collaborating with Weyerhaeuser.

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Ultrasonics (sensor configuration, integration); data acquisition (developing the electronics required to automate the sensor); fluid dynamics (model development of ultrasonic signal attenuation versus frequency over range of particle sizes and slurry properties; interrogation of multiphase systems during mixing & transport to evaluate probe performance).
