Nuclear Contraband Detector Instrument (429)
Problem: Need handheld instrument to identify gamma-ray emitting radioisotopes and to indicate direction to radiation source.
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Controls and Measurements.
PNNL Solution:
- Used CdZnTe crystal detector array to detect gamma-ray emissions
- Developed data analysis algorithms based on gamma-ray/detector interactions* and detector geometry to identify the radioisotopes in source and probable direction to the source
- Analytically evaluated algorithms performance prior to implementation
(*Compton scattering.)
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Modeling of gamma-rays with detector array material; algorithm development based on radiation/material interactions and array geometry; sensor interface development; system integration; lab testing.
