Nuclear Radiation Sensors
Compact, Low-Power Gamma-Ray Sensor (230)
Problem: Develop compact, ultra-low-power, inexpensive gamma-ray sensor for unattended detection of nuclear materials
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments
PNNL Solution:
- Use optically stimulated luminescent materials to record accumulated dose
- Develop active readout using LED stimulation, and solid state photo-sensors
- RF link for on-demand remote readout and data transfer
- Self-configuring communication protocol for multiple-sensor network
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Optically stimulated luminescent (OSL) material phenomena & applications; OSL readout mechanisms; nuclear contraband emissions & shielding effects; electronics design for OSL readout system, data processing & RF for communication links; sensor design including optical & electronic subsystems; user interface design; software for system control & data processing; system fabrication & testing; system design & performance documentation.
