Nuclear Radiation Sensors

Passive "Recorder" for Radiation Dose (194)

Problem: Need passive method for recording cumulative nuclear radiation exposure with long-term data stability

Laboratory Testing of Cadidate OSL Materials for Dosimeter Applications Laboratory Testing of Cadidate OSL Materials for Dosimeter Applications

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms

PNNL Solution:

  • Radiation created useful defects in some crystaline materials that:
    • Exhibited long-term stability and
    • Could be annealed for re-use
  • Defects in some crystals could be "read" repeatedly using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL)
  • OSL signal was proportional to "dose"

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Material science; radiation effects of materials; material characterization; laser based measurements for material evaluation; controlled radiation exposures; test planning, performance, and analysis.
