Nuclear Radiation Sensors
Flight Crew Radiation Dosimeter (138)
Problem: Need equipment to measure natural, high altitude radiation exposure for aircraft and space craft personnel
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Integrated Systems
PNNL Solution:
- Developed sensor that measures biologically effective radiation dose
- Developed small, lightweight instrument system to record in-flight radiation measurements
- Commercialized instrument
- Instruments have flown on Shuttle and MIR space missions and US airlines
- Underlying technology was recognized with a 1984 FLC Award.
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Radiation detection physics; analog and digital electronics design, fabrication, and testing; software development for controls and data acquisition/analysis; system integration; mechanical system design and integration.
