Problem: Specialized optical fibers were required to meet client's unique sensor application requirements

PNNL Solution:

• Developed scintillating glass formulations that meet neutron detection application requirements
• Fabricated specialized optical fibers from scintillating glass using PNNL fiber drawing towers
• PNNL fiber optic sensors have been successfully deployed
• PNNL fiber optic radiation sensors were recognized with a 1999 R&D 100 Award and a 1999 FLC Award
