Nuclear Radiation Sensors

Dosimeter for Medical Radiation Therapy (153)

Optical Fibers

Problem: Real-time sensors are needed to monitor radiation therapy dosages to ensure optimal treatment results

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Devices

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed superior scintillating glass for real-time measurement of local radiation (X-ray and neutron) doses
  • Fabricated scintillating optical fibers
  • Developed in-situ probe to monitor boron neutron capture therapy dose
  • Data allowed accurate dose control
  • Clinical trials conducted

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Optical engineering; single photon counting; analog and digital electronics; mechanical hardware design; system test and evaluation.
