Characterize TRU Radioactive Waste (164)

Characterize TRU Radioactive Waste

Problem: Need rapid, low-cost, non-invasive method to allow segregation of TRU from non-TRU radioactive waste in drums.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Instruments through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed technique based upon neutron detectors that are tolerant to high gamma-ray exposure
  • Optimized system design to provide detection sensitivity of 10% of legal threshold (superior sorting ability)
  • Designed and deployed mobile system to characterize 2 drums/hour

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Radiation detector development; gamma-ray spectral measurements; calibration facilities for radiation detectors; transuranic (TRU) content based on neutron measurements; analog and digital electronics; system integration; system test and evaluation.
