Fiber Optic Sensor Development (377c)
(Back to main topic page)

Basic fiber optic sensing modalities:

  • Optical fiber sensors can be used to measure:
    • Physical parameters: strain, temperature, pressure, etc.
    • Chemical/biological spectral signatures
    • Nuclear radiation
    • Selective target analyte capture
  • Types:
    • Interferometric: Mach-Zhender, Fabry-Perot, Michelson, Sagnac, etc.
    • Gratings: Bragg and Long-period
    • Evanescent field: fluorescence, refractive index
    • Spectral: absorption, fluorescence, etc.
