Optical Fluorescence for Material Detection (373)
Problem: Determine optimal conditions to obtain fluorescence signatures for the detection of selected materials
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments
PNNL Solution:
- Determine wavelength effects (excitation and emission) on fluorescence emission strength for target material and others present in samples
- Select optimal wavelength for detection of target material
- Develop and demonstrate simple excitation/detection system
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Spectrofluorimeter measurements of samples and possible confounders to determine signal strength dependence of excitation and emission (detection) wavelengths; spectral analysis to select most efficient excitation and detection wavelengths; optical system design for implementation including source and detector selection including any spectral filtering required; laboratory system assembly and verification testing; test analysis.
