Establish Case Mounted Sensor Thresholds (468)

Photo and graphics showing shipping case, drop test, modeling analysis and chart of test results and shock threshold

Problem: Need to determine packaged equipment shock from single accelerometer mounted on the shipping container.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Instruments through Integrated Systems.

PNNL Solution:

  • Prepared instrument shipping container to support experimental evaluation.
  • Performed series of drop tests to establish acceleration data range.
  • Performed analytical modeling to establish shipping case vs. enclosed equipment acceleration effects.
  • Established accelerometer data values corresponding to equipment acceleration damage thresholds.

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Performance specification of sensor module, mechanical drop testing (test planning, equipment configuration, test performance, data collection and analysis, reporting), statistical analysis of shock test results, analytical modeling to relate sensor data to shock levels experienced by the product in shipping case, preparation of damage threshold recommendations, review with client staff.
