Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems.

PNNL Solution:

  • Identified key measurement requirements and target liquids
  • Performed laboratory evaluation of liquid properties
    • Leveraged ultrasonic (UT) measurement equipment methods (augmented as necessary)
    • Leveraged PNNL staff knowledge of fluid properties and dynamics
  • Established liquid signature library/database
  • Determined key properties to enable liquid identification and characterization
  • Tailored UT measurement system to detect and discriminate key signatures
  • Developed algorithms for rapid liquid evaluation
  • Developed and demonstrated portable prototype instrumentation
  • Designed and developed tools for liquids in large containers
  • Designed and developed tools for liquids in small containers

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Laboratory measurement of acoustic properties of liquids to develop signature library (targets of interest and common commercial/industrial liquids that might complicate the detection of the target liquids); analysis of library data to identify distinguishing signal features (signatures); develop and evaluate laboratory measurement systems to exploit key signature differences; design prototype equipment for practical method evaluation; develop data analysis algorithms and software for instrument control and data analysis; demonstrate instrument performance; document design and performance; train staff in system operation; commercialize instrument to ensure source of instruments to meet client requirements.
