Transmissometer Optics Development (177)

Problem: Design multi-band optical transmissometer modules to allow field evaluation of military obscurant effectiveness

Equipment

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors & Devices through Instruments

PNNL Solution:

  • Established performance specification
  • Selected pitch/catch system concept
  • Designed multi-band optical source (Visible-IR) with collimating optics
  • Designed receiver with "color" filtering for spectral band discrimination
  • Designed electronics & optical mount subsystems to enable equipment use
  • Demonstrated superior performance
Optical Image

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Multi-band optical source evaluation & design including source intensity stabilization to allow reliable quantitative measurements; multi-band detection system design employing multiple bandpass filters provide data at specified optical wavelengths; reflective telescope optical design for source and receiver modules; detector electronics design to recover signals with high dynamic range; electro-optical mounting hardware design; system assembly & alignment; design package documentation.
