Evaluation of Liquids in Small Containers (438)

Problem: Need portable instruments for non-invasive inspection and evaluation of liquids in small, closed containers.

Photo collage: automated, portable, bench-top, liquid ID and classification systems.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors and Devices through Integrated Systems.

PNNL Solution:

  • Effects of wall material and thickness can not be ignored for small containers
  • A double-sided system was used to allow compensation for container walls while meeting application requirements
  • Developed portable units containing sender, receiver, distance gauge, data processing electronics, user interface, and embedded database for liquid identification or classification

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Develop and evaluate laboratory measurement system to leverage key signature differences; design and build integrated prototype equipment for practical method evaluation; develop data analysis algorithms and software for instrument control and data analysis; evaluate and demonstrate instrument performance; develop state-of-the-art acoustic measurement methodology; document design and performance; train staff in system operation; conduct performance validation tests in-Lab and at external laboratories; commercialize instrument to ensure source for instruments to meet client requirements.
