Evaluation of Liquids in Large Containers (437)

Problem: Need portable instruments for non-invasive evaluation of liquids in large, closed bulk-sized containers.

Photo collage: handheld sensor units, storage tanks and staff working with units

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors and Devices through Integrated Systems.

PNNL Solution:

  • Container material and thickness can be ignored for large containers
  • Single-sided approach used to simplify system design while meeting application and user requirements
  • Designed integrated* handheld units for field identification or classification of liquids
  • Licensed technology to meet client need for production instruments
  • Capability resulted in R&D 100 Award and FLC Award

*Units include user interface, sender-receiver, data processing, and liquid property database

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Develop and evaluate laboratory measurement equipment to leverage key signature differences; design and build integrated prototype equipment for practical method evaluation; develop data analysis algorithms and software for instrument control and data analysis; evaluate and demonstrate instrument performance; document design and performance; train staff in system operation; commercialize instrument to ensure source for instruments to meet client requirements.
