Ultrasonic Property Database for Liquids (435)

Problem: Need database of ultrasonic properties for liquids of interest* to allow instrument development and data interpretation.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices.

PNNL Solution:

  • Selected liquids for analysis
  • Measured properties of selected liquids over temperature range
  • Determined measurement errors and uncertainties to ensure reliable data interpretation
  • Compiled database structured to allow reliable liquid identification or classification

*Both target and likely confounder liquids.
++ Confounder liquids - common liquids that may impair data interpretation.

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Analyze liquid property data to establish key parameters to support application requirements; establish database structure to allow efficient searching and sample analysis; record required data for test liquids including temperature effects; populate database using experimental data; evaluate measurement errors and uncertainties to ensure reliable data interpretation; conduct validation tests and performance demonstration tests in the field.
