Ultrasonic Signatures of Target Liquids (436)

Problem: Determine key ultrasonic properties of liquids that enable discrimination between target and confounder* liquids.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Devices

PNNL Solution:

  • Evaluated ultrasonic property database to determine liquid-specific ultrasonic signatures to allow required evaluations (e.g., ultrasound velocity in liquid, energy absorption coefficient, liquid density, temperature effects, etc.)
  • Estimated ability to discriminate reliably between various liquids (consistent with data uncertainty, data value separation for various liquids, etc.)

*Confounder liquids - common liquids that may impair data interpretation

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Analysis of ultrasonic property data for liquid samples including interfacial reflection, refraction effects, absorption, scattering, frequency and polarization effects and temperature effects; identification of key data differences that allow discrimination between different liquids; evaluation of data accuracy and precision on ability to reliably evaluate liquids; multi-effect signature analysis; algorithm development to provide definitive material identification from ultrasonic measurements.
