In Situ Soil Moisture Sensor (125)

In-Situ Soil Moisture Sensor

Problem: Develop robust, inexpensive sensor to determine soil moisture levels at point of measurement

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed simple electro-optic sensor with no moving parts
  • Demonstrated suitable performance over moisture range of importance for waste site monitoring and agricultural applications
  • Received 1991 R&D 100 and 1992 FLC Awards
  • Commercialized through licensing to Instrumentation Northwest, Inc.
