In Situ Soil Moisture Sensor (125)
Problem: Develop robust, inexpensive sensor to determine soil moisture levels at point of measurement
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments
PNNL Solution:
- Developed simple electro-optic sensor with no moving parts
- Demonstrated suitable performance over moisture range of importance for waste site monitoring and agricultural applications
- Received 1991 R&D 100 and 1992 FLC Awards
- Commercialized through licensing to Instrumentation Northwest, Inc.

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Moisture sensor based on previous development of sensor for gasoline in soil; in situ soil and vadose zone moisture monitoring experience; moisture effects on the optical properties of nylon filter material; electro-optic sensor development using LED light source and nylon filter sensing element; prototype sensor development and operational evaluation; sensor design and operational documentation; technology transfer.
