Automated Color Sorting of Objects (126)

Problem: Provide rapid, reliable color characterization and sorting of objects using a simple optics and electronics system

Compact Optical Subsystem Compact Optical Subsystem

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Recorded spectral reflectance data on sample population
  • Determined distinctive color signatures of different objects
  • Selected optical filters to provide reliable color identification using two-channel detection system
  • Deployed system
Signal Grouping from Two Color-Filtered Detectors Signal Grouping from Two Color-filtered Detectors for Color Sorting

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Spectrophotometric measurements for color spectral signature determination; spectral analyses to determine wavelengths providing reliable color separation; optical system design including light source, color filtration, object imaging, and optical detectors; electronics for detector signal amplification and signal discrimination based on two-channel threshold criteria for each color; mechanical design for optical system mounting.
