Non-contact Moisture Measurement (133)

Lab Test of Sensor in Simulated Waste Lab Test of Sensor in Simulated Waste

Problem: Develop non-contact method to determine moisture percentage in radioactive-chemical waste materials

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments

PNNL Solution:

  • Completed laboratory tests showing eddy current signal correlation to moisture level
  • Establish techniques for quantitative data interpretation
  • Successfully demonstrate method in waste tank to meet application requirements

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Electromagnetic properties of dry and moist solids; modeling of electromagnetic field interaction with materials as a function of eddy current frequency; eddy current measurement methods including probe/coil design; electronics design for driving eddy current probes; electronics design for signal processing and detection; software for data analysis; mechanical design for probes and test fixtures; statistical analysis of detected signals; test planning and reporting.
