Electromagnetic Signatures of Metals (132)
Problem: Determine Electromagnetic Signatures of Metals (132) to support rapid, non-destructive metal sample identification
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Devices
PNNL Solution:
- Conducted lab tests to determine properties of a variety of metals
- Established complex impedance "signatures" for metals important for import/export control
- Developed data analysis algorithm to allow rapid metal identification
- Developed practical instrument
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Knowledge of electromagnetic properties of metals; electromagnetic field interaction with metals; eddy current measurement methods including probe/coil design; electronics design for driving eddy current probes; electronics design for signal processing and detection; software for data analysis; mechanical design for probes and test fixtures; statistical analysis of detected signals; system integration; test planning and reporting; customer staff training; field deployment and demonstration of integrated equipment systems.
