Problem: Develop non-contact method for rapid, automated sorting of aluminum alloys in mixed scrap
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis Method Development
PNNL Solution:
- Etched scrap; recorded color video image
- Measured image color and brightness of individual pieces of scrap
- Calculated color coordinates for each piece of scrap and recorded on 2-D plot
- Identified alloys by ploting grouping and alloy specific color reference signatures
- Completed successful demonstration
