Additional information on the Construction Analogy

The first step in contracting for a construction project is to identify a general contractor with demonstrated performance in the needed application area (e.g., remodeling, new residential, small commercial, shopping mall, heavy industrial, roads, bridges, etc.). At PNNL, this is equivalent to identifying the Product Line matched to your needs. The contractor will gain an understanding of the requirements and vision for the final product from discussions and the product description. The contractor will translate this information into needed subcontractor skills (foundations, electrical, plumbing, framing, etc.), work sequencing, project costs, and management procedures to complete the job in a timely and cost efficient manner. When the project begins, the contractor will assign a qualified site manager (project manager) who will be responsible for the day-to-day activities including schedule, costs, and work quality including the management and coordination of all of the skilled subcontractors required for the project.
